Project Summary:
AMI Environmental (AMI) was one of the first environmental consultants on site to respond to an emergency involving a catastrophic explosion at Terra’s nitrogen plant in Port Neal, Iowa. AMI provided consulting and analytical services for the control of heavily damaged and widely dispersed asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint. In addition to identifying the extent of contamination and control requirements, AMI also conducted and documented exposure monitoring for plant personnel and remediation contractors. Due to its extensive documentation and consulting experience, AMI was the designated point-of-contact for coordination with OSHA and other government agency inquiries.

During the project, AMI received a commendation from OSHA for providing safety services that addressed asbestos-containing materials and lead-based paint. AMI staff worked around the clock, compiling over 48,000 man hours and taking nearly 38,000 environmental samples to meet the client’s needs in this volatile environment. No penalties or citations were incurred by the client for work performed by AMI personnel.
